'Tis said of love that it sometimes goes, sometimes flies; runs with one, walks gravely with another; turns a third into ice, and sets a fourth in a flame: it wounds one, another it kills: like lightning it begins and ends in the same moment: it makes that fort yield at night which it besieged but in the morning; for there is no force able to resist it.

On a mission with the rest of their team, Bart and Jake have yet another disagreement when Jake refuses permission for Bart to investigate certain of the ruined buildings. A disgruntled Bart decides to disobey the major and enter a ruin he is particularly interested in, believing it will reveal something of the language of the long disappeared inhabitants.

Bart soon realizes he has made a mistake when he becomes trapped underground with no-one knowing where he is, and he is then subjected to a cave-in, and this time Bart doesn't believe he has any chance of being found, let alone being rescued.

When Jake returns from his patrol and can find no trace of Bart he realizes that the captain has disobeyed his order. Jake's anger at his lover's action is short-lived when Bart cannot be found. Jake summons the other members of the team and a search begins.
