'Tis said of love that it sometimes goes, sometimes flies; runs with one, walks gravely with another; turns a third into ice, and sets a fourth in a flame: it wounds one, another it kills: like lightning it begins and ends in the same moment: it makes that fort yield at night which it besieged but in the morning; for there is no force able to resist it.

A favor for a friend can be very costly.

On Alkya, a planet a long way from Earth, a settlement has been set up to survey an alien base. Major Jake Archer and Captain Bart Hilton are part of one of the survey teams.

One evening Jake asks Bart to do him a favor. Bart agrees and works in the underground base while Jake goes off to take part in a concert. A huge explosion rips through the base and Bart is left injured and trapped.

Jake is horrified and full of guilt. Unsure if Bart is even still alive, Jake is forced to wait as the engineers try and dig out the man Jake secretly loves.

Bart lies amidst the rubble of Jake's office, afraid the roof will finally come down and kill him and his greatest regret is that he never told Jake how he really feels about him.
